Europe stands at a crossroads

“The future of the European Union depends on how well it can manage economic competitiveness, geopolitical shifts, and technological change,” says former UK diplomat Alistair Starling. “To stay strong, the EU must find the right balance between regulation and innovation. Businesses need space to grow, while social stability and sustainability remain important.”

Starling will highlight this vision at the First Tuesday of the Month event in Tallinn on March 4, 2025. He will explore how businesses and policymakers can work together to ensure Europe remains competitive.

Challenges for businesses

According to Starling, companies in Europe face three major challenges:

  • Regulatory complexity – Rules differ across EU countries and the UK, making it difficult to navigate compliance.
  • Talent and workforce development – Digital skills and AI expertise are in high demand, but there are not enough trained professionals.
  • Geopolitical uncertainty – Supply chains, trade agreements, and political shifts create risks that businesses must manage.
Working with authorities to move forward

Success in Europe requires businesses and policymakers to work together. Engaging with government stakeholders can help shape policies that support both innovation and investment. This does not have to be complicated. Public-private partnerships, industry alliances, and open discussions can create a business environment that works for everyone.

Why collaboration matters

Starling believes that the future of business in Europe is built on collaboration. Governments, companies, and entrepreneurs must align their efforts to drive economic growth. Cross-sector initiatives like the Future of Education Consortium, which he co-leads, show how partnerships can make a difference. By improving education and workforce readiness, we can prepare Europe for the challenges ahead.
